Master Closets come in all shapes and sizes, from walk-in closets with simple hangers to double master closets to closets with custom cabinetry. But not all closets are created equal. What would you include in your dream closet?

Read to the end to learn 3 of our best tips for designing your dream master closet for your remodel or new construction home.

INCORPORATE DIFFERENT TYPES OF STORAGE & CUSTOM CABINETRY

Include different shapes and sizes of storage in your master closet such as space to hang long dresses or shorter rows and racks to hang shirts and pants. Include built-in cabinetry such as a bureau, jewelry display, or shoe rack to make the most out of this space.

Remember that your master bedroom should be an extension of your bedroom suite so you should incorporate cohesive design elements into this space. Choose neutral or light-colored interior walls for contrast and higher visibility.

ADD A WINDOW TO ALLOW NATURAL LIGHT INTO THE SPACE

Add a tinted window in this space to allow natural light into the area. This will help you wake up in the morning and keep your mood cheery while you are picking out your clothing. This is a great way to get off on the right foot every morning.

Natural light also helps if you are getting dressed quickly and don’t have time to fuss with the light switch. You won’t have to “get ready in the dark” any longer with a custom-selected window treatment included in the plans for your master closet.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT LIGHTING

You’ve incorporated natural light into your master closet but what about the right lighting? LED lights are energy-efficient and don’t get hot too quickly. They are a great choice for placing behind frosted or glass cabinet doors to display shoes or jewelry. You can also opt for LED closet rails.

If you are including a vanity area or dressing space in your closet, incandescent and halogen light sources always have the best CRI (100), meaning they most accurately render colors. If you wish to use an energy-efficient LED or fluorescent light source, ensure your selection has a CRI of 90-100. This provides optimal color rendering in closet settings.

To eliminate shadows under the eyes, chin, and cheeks, install lighting fixtures on either side of your mirror, instead of directly overhead.
Task lighting may also be a good option for your master closet.
